Watamote episode 9

If last episode was the humiliation conga, then this episode is just “why Summer sucks”. While episode 7 had the description of someone wasting their Summer away alone down flawlessly and episode 8 had the pure meanness of Tomoko’s humiliation in front of her cousin, this episode is just…..there. And that’s not a bad thing.

Summer is coming to an end, but Yui has to work in her uncle’s cafe. Tomoko visits her and fantasizes about working in a cafe like that (the punchline is so obvious that it’s amazing). It is then followed by Summer cleaning and a very low-key viewing of a meteor shower.

This episode, aside from the first half, if quiet. There is no real jokes here. It manages to capture that melancholy of a Summer ending, especially if it was one in which nothing happened. There are no grand plans or stupid hijinks like before. This episode is, for lack of a better word, just nice (although, that’s still “nice for Watamote”). There isn’t much else to it. It’s simple and pleasant (the most pleasant episode in the whole series).
